Belated

Well, waiting for the prime time to blog, is sort of like waiting for godot, minus the social commentary, profundity and absurdity, but in the sense that the prime time, like godot, never arrives. So, I shall be doing things more piece meal from this point forth as I’ve received some e-mail complaints in reference to my apparent disregard for keeping you folks entertained and up to date.

This post returns to the mundane, but I am finding that even the mundane in China frequently borders on an adventure. So, Meg and I have finally found an apartment, which brings us closer to work and the action of the city than my parent’s lovely “country estate” out in the burbs. We’d looked at a number of places before settling on this abode. The first had a slick layer of grease over the kitchen (courtesy of wok cooking) and reaked of mold and mothballs. The second was itsy bitsy, but quaint with a gorgeous view of Century Park, the largest public green space in the city (there’s a few private golf clubs that are larger, but I’ve neither the money, nor the desire to visit such places, unless, it was to stage a land invasion, or perhaps repatriate some crops on the greens.)

At any rate, our new place is spacious (76 square meters), clean, high (16th floor), with a brightly lit kitchen and two burner gas stove. Between the kitchen and the easy access to a nearby market full of wonderful, fresh and often unusual produce I am content.

The portion of the city that we’re located in is newer, and hence more sterile, but we’re a short 15min from a subway stop that quickly and efficiently will whisk us to the far more interesting Puxi. Pudong is the business, finance and government portion of the city, as evidenced by the numerous gargantuan structures and the soon to be completed Shanghai World Financial Centre that will be one of the tallest buildings in the world. Never mind that these structures are all built on top of what once prime farm land in a country facing difficulties in feeding it’s population.

I see they have Ikea in China too. Also, apparently direct linking is counter-revolutionary.

Bastards. I'm working on the picture problem. I've got temporary direct access to blogspot again, so I'll see what I can do. Not so reliable working from the mail to blogger window. And I didn't have time for waiting to see the completed upload. At any rate, yes Jordie, they do have IKEA in China, right down to the 4 RMB (50 cent) hot dogs. I had 4.
